AFTER THE MOVIE: EATS/DISCUSSION at L’Albatros, 11401 Bellflower Road, a ten minute walk from the Cinematheque. On exiting the Cleveland Institute of Art, walk north on 116th Street to Euclid. Cross Euclid, walk a few steps to the left and then turn right to continue northward on 115th Street. At the corner of Bellflower there’s a stop sign. Take a sharp left onto Bellflower. BASHU, THE LITTLE STRANGER (1989) @ Cleveland Cinematheque / Indian Flame
Cinematheque at Cleveland Institute of Art, 11610 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, OH, USAfter his home is destroyed and his parents are killed in the Iran-Iraq war, Bashu, a small, dark-skinned boy from the Arabic-speaking Persian Gulf region of Iran, escapes on a truck to the northern part of the country, bordering the Caspian Sea. There he is taken in by Na’i, a peasant woman raising her own two children alone because her husband, who lost an arm in the war, is elsewhere in the country seeking employment. Since Na’i speaks only Gilaki, a local tongue, she and Bashu have no language in common. But over time they form a strong bond.
