Since I posted this so late, I will post a place if we get enough people.DESCRIPTION
Luis (Sergi López) and his son Esteban arrive at an illegal rave deep in the mountains of southern Morocco. They are searching for Mar — daughter and sister — who vanished months ago at one of these endless, sleepless parties. Surrounded by electronic music and a raw, unfamiliar sense of freedom, they hand out her photo again and again. A group of soldiers break up the rave, and Luis and Esteban follow another van to another party, and along the route have to cope with the challenges posed by the Sahara on a journey that forces them to confront their own limits. The latest film by Oliver Laxe (Fire Will Come, Mimosas) is one of the most acclaimed films of the year. Spain’s Official Submission to the 98th Academy Awards. “You should see “Sirāt” twice: first, for the swift, brutalizing shock of the experience and, second, for the lingering consolation of its spirit, and its insistence that the most meaningful families can be forged under the bleakest of circumstances” –Justin Chang, The New Yorker.

REVIEW
So intense you’ll want to scarper but so riveting you can’t leave, Sirāt is an assault on the senses, mind and emotions. If only all movies took swings this bold.

THE PRESIDENT'S CAKE (2025) Dinner FIRST @ Home Bistro then film @ Cinematheque
The Cleveland Institute of Art Cinematheque, 11610 Euclid Avenue, Cleveland, OH, USIt’s 1990. Iraq has invaded Kuwait and American military action is widely anticipated. Despite her best efforts to avoid the “honor”, nine-year-old Lamia is chosen to represent her school by baking a cake as part of the compulsory national celebration of President Saddam Hussein’s birthday. So she goes in search of the necessary ingredients amid stringent international economic sanctions. Cast almost entirely with first-time local actors, the film portrays both the omnipresent terror of Saddam’s dictatorship and the timeless way of life of Iraq’s southern marshes, unchanged for over 5,000 years.
“beguiling, heartbreaking” - San Francisco Chronicle
“a tragicomic gem” - Hollywood Reporter
Rotten Tomatoes: 100%
Winner of both the Director’s Fortnight People’s Choice Award and the Golden Camera Award at Cannes.
