GOSFORD PARK

I’ve seen it a couple of times but it’s so good! Robert Altman’s ensemble casting and his improvisational directing creates magnificent films. This is a great one! And that cast!

Italy, United Kingdom, United States | 2001 | Robert Altman

A few years before writing TV’s Downton Abbey, Julian Fellowes won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for this upstairs-downstairs comedy-mystery directed by Robert Altman. Evoking Jean Renoir’s The Rules of the Game while channeling Agatha Christie, the movie chronicles a recreational weekend at an English country house in 1932. But when their wealthy host dies unexpectedly, the distinguished guests, aides, and servants soon find themselves suspects in a murder investigation. The cast is large and stellar (even by Altman standards): Alan Bates, Stephen Fry, Michael Gambon, Richard E. Grant, Derek Jacobi, Helen Mirren, Clive Owen, Ryan Phillippe, Maggie Smith, Kristin Scott Thomas, and Emily Watson, among others. DCP. 137 min
