ROMERIA (2025) @ Cleveland Cinematheque / Home Bistro
Details
In this semi-autobiographical tale from Spanish director Carla Simone, 18-year-old Marina is about to attend college in Barcelona, hoping to become a filmmaker. Having been orphaned at a very young age, she discovers she is not listed on her father’s death certificate. To apply for a scholarship, she will need her paternal grandparents’ signatures to correct that omission. So, carrying her mother’s diary and a hand-held digital camcorder, she travels to Spain’s Atlantic coast to meet her father’s family for the first time. There she begins to unearth her parents’ buried past. (The film’s title means “pilgrimage”.)
A “lovely, pensive costal voyage” - Variety
“deeply moving not only for its sense of clear-eyed grace and forgiveness, but for the way it evokes the feeling of a budding filmmaker discovering the cathartic power of artistic creation” - Slant
Rotten Tomatoes: 91%
