After his home is destroyed and his parents are killed in the Iran-Iraq war, Bashu, a small, dark-skinned boy from the Arabic-speaking Persian Gulf region of Iran, escapes on a truck to the northern part of the country, bordering the Caspian Sea. There he is taken in by Na’i, a peasant woman raising her own two children alone because her husband, who lost an arm in the war, is elsewhere in the country seeking employment. Since Na’i speaks only Gilaki, a local tongue, she and Bashu have no language in common. But over time they form a strong bond.
