SAMBA TRAORE (1993) @ Cleveland Cinematheque / Mitchell's Ice Cream
Details
Two men rob a gas station in the West African nation of Burkina Faso. The station attendant is wounded and one or the robbers is shot dead. The other – Samba Traore – escapes with a suitcase full of cash. Samba returns to his home village, opens a bar and marries the beautiful Saratou. But the past is never far behind.
“[Director] Ouedraogo, whose eye for visual composition gives his films a serene, stately beauty, also makes Samba Traore a quiet study of the culture in which it unfolds.” – NY Times
Winner of the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival.
