EAST AND WEST (1923) @ Cleveland Cinematheque / Indian Flame
Cinematheque at Cleveland Institute of Art, 11610 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, OH, USIn the earliest surviving Yiddish film, Molly Picon, star of 1920s Yiddish theater, plays the daughter of a rich, assimilated American who is invited to a family celebration in an Eastern European shtetl. Though her brash behavior alienates the locals, she is admired by a shy orthodox Talmudic scholar, played by Picon’s real-life husband Jacob Kalich. (Almost fifty years after making East and West, Picon played Yente in the 1971 film version of Fiddler on the Roof.)
East and West will be shown at the Cinematheque with an original score performed by pianist Donald Sosin and violinist Alicia Svigals, “co-founder of the Grammy Award-winning band The Klezmatics ...[and] considered by many to be the world's foremost living klezmer fiddler” (- Wikipedia)

As Above, So Below at Cinematheque early dinner at Sittoo's afterwards
Cinematheque at Cleveland Institute of Art, 11610 Euclid Ave., Cleveland, OH, USIt is a short film that is under one hour being presented by the UCLA Library Film and TV Archives. As of Sept 9th, This film of $12 for non members and $9 for members. Larry Clark directed Kids (1995) and Bully (2001) both of these films I had mixed feelings about, but they were interesting movies. Larry Clark served in Vietman 1964 to 1965 and that might be the reason he takes on dark subject matter in his films. As Above, So Below takes on the subject matter of Black Rebellion in Los Angeles in the early 1970's. We will meet by the benches at 250 pm and dinner after the movie.
