CCL Canberra September: Investing in Social Capital with Dr Siwan Lovett

Details

Join us this month to hear from Dr Lovett of the Australian River Restoration Centre.

Dr Lovett has been working in natural resources management for the past twenty-five years, empowering people to act by sharing knowledge and inspiring collaborative action. In 2008, she established the not-for-profit Australian River Restoration Centre to support and facilitate people working in river management. She also manages the successful Rivers of Carbon initiative which is working with Landcare groups to protect and restore riparian areas across the Southern Tablelands of NSW. Siwan believes that we must value and invest in social capital, which is made up of ourselves, our relationships and our networks, at the same time as we protect and restore our living natural capital, as people and nature are interdependent.

Ecosystem functioning is something many of us are concerned about as we experience the impact of a drying climate. We know that river ecosystems need particular flows, temperatures, inputs and outputs to respond and flourish. What we are not good at doing, however, is recognising that just like a river ecosystem, our social ‘ecosystems’ also need particular inputs and outputs to thrive. This presentation will argue that valuing and investing in our social capital, which is made up of ourselves, our relationships and our networks, is just as important as protecting and restoring the natural ecosystems we feel so passionate about.
