.NET Cloud-Native Bootcamp

Details

.NET developers haven't had access to the capabilities necessary to become cloud-native (better software, faster) .... until now.

To attend, you must register at https://bit.ly/303x7XT

Join Pivotal and Redis Labs in this one-day bootcamp. You will learn exactly how to create cloud-native applications with .NET. You'll hear about patterns and anti-patterns, and then put hands on the keyboard to put best practices into action. We’ll talk about .NET Framework, .NET Core, Pivotal Cloud Foundry on Microsoft Azure, with Redis and the exciting new Steeltoe library for microservices. Whether your .NET apps are staying on-premises or moving to a public cloud, these principles will help you build more scalable, resilient, and adaptable systems that drive your competitive advantage.

Exclusively for this workshop: How do .NET developers interact with the database to influence application development? With a developer-loved, yet operationally reliable database (Redis). Our friends from Redis Labs will demo a database running on Azure with the flexibility of cloud native, plus the operational resilience.

By the end of the day, you’ll get exposed to what you need for refactoring existing .NET apps, and building entirely new ones in a cloud-native way. Join us in San Francisco for a great day together!

Who should attend: .NET developers with 1+ years of experience writing web-based applications. Azure, Redis and Pivotal Cloud Foundry experience is not required.

Bring a laptop with …

A code IDE or editor for .NET apps (e.g. Visual Studio 2017, Visual Studio Code). Visual Studio Code is a free download - https://code.visualstudio.com/download

CF command line tool installed - https://docs.cloudfoundry.org/cf-cli/install-go-cli.html#installer

Agenda

8:30-9:00 AM Arrival, Networking and Breakfast
9:00-9:15 AM The need to be good at software. Some brief examples and data points to highlight the growing importance of delivering a compelling software experience.
9:15-10:00 AM Microservices, and decomposing the monolith. A look at what microservices are, and how people start to create a microservices architecture out of a monolithic app.
10:00-10:15 AM What does "cloud-native" mean? Define “cloud-native” and look at key criteria for building apps in a cloudy way.
10:15-10:30 AM Break
10:30-11:15 AM Introducing Pivotal Cloud Foundry (PCF). Why run PCF on Azure? What role do “platforms” play in a cloud-native environment? We’ll look at PCF and its core components.
11:15-11:30 AM Q & A
11:30-12:30 PM Don’t let your database be the bottleneck. Redis Labs will demonstrate why in cloud development, deciding the operating model for databases matters just as much as how to build apps quickly, scale them, and keep them up and running.
12:30-1:00 PM Lunch and short address by Magenic
1:00-4:30 PM
Hands On Labs: Build .NET Core apps and run them on Pivotal Application Services for Windows (PASW). Use the Steeltoe framework to implement actuators and cloud connectors to make use of environment variables and app instances. Bind your .NET app to Azure SQL using the Azure Service Broker, to combine the best of PASW and the Azure Cloud.
4:30-4:45 PM Begin Your Cloud-Native Journey:

  • Options for self-learning through the Steeltoe sample apps and Pivotal Web Services

Speakers

Prasad Bopardikar - Partner Solutions Architect, Pivotal. Prasad works with customers and partners worldwide in implementing solutions supporting micro services architecture with Cloud Foundry and Spring.

Robert Sirchia - Lead Consultant Cloud Practice Lead, Magenic
Robert is one of Magenic’s two Cloud Practice Leads, heading up the Magenic Pivotal Practice
