In the past several years, a growing number of scholarly institutions have begun setting up “digital commons” as a means to promote collaboration and community among their members. Powered by the open source software package Commons in a Box (CBOX), these digital commons supplement traditional institutional websites with a multipurpose virtual space for members to interact with one another and share their research with the broader public. In this talk, I will discuss some of the opportunities and challenges related to campus-based digital commons with the aim of eliciting a discussion about how libraries might support their development.
