[18 Tech Talks in 1 Day]

The 7th BIG MiniConf will be held on February 29, 2020!
Our 11th cohort students will give 18 Tech Talks, all on different topics. You are free to join the whole event, or come and go as you please.

We have 2 simultaneous tracks (A & B).

TRACK A SCHEDULE:

13:00 An Intro to Service Workers
Travis Ricks

Learn what Service Workers are and how you can use them to add functionality to your websites that mimic native apps. You can add push notifications, offline functionality and more. Get an introduction and learn about some quirks to using this technology. We'll also walk through building a basic Service Worker for a website.

13:30 Create a Search Engine with Elasticsearch
Kota Aoyama

Kota will talk about creating a simple search engine with Elasticsearch. He'll explain what Elasticsearch is, why Elasticsearch is important and how to create a search engine with Elasticsearch.
The audience will understand the overview of Elasticsearch and how to start learning Elasticsearch, and how to create a search engine with it.

14:00 Deep Dive Into Browser
Haruna Utsumi

Haruna will explore the internal processing of browsers and describe how browsers display the web page. Understanding internal processing helps you to write efficient and high-performance code.
If you want to know what's happening inside the browser when you visit this web page, come to this talk and learn behind the scenes of web browsers.

14:30 Let's Build a Software Product Together!
Rafael da Silva Viana

15:00 How A Computer Knows What I Like- Introduction to
Recommendation Systems
Sachi Grannan

Sachi will talk about recommendation system algorithms. There are two main parts involved in, the first is machine learning, and the second algorithms. Sachi will talk about Netflix movie recommendation system, and explain how they decide what movies to recommend. And she will show how you can make a small recommendation system in Javascript.

15:30 Immersive Experiences with Speech-Integrated AR
Ashley Kekona

A new era of end-users has placed great value on real and immersive "experiences", driving a demand to close the gap between the virtual world and reality. Ashley will focus her presentation on the integration of speech recognition to augmented reality technology. Automatic speech recognition has largely developed parallel to Virtual reality, and we are in an exciting time when the two are starting to merge. Through a simple demonstration, she introduces how speech-integrated AR apps can now be easily created (for free) and immediately implemented.

16:00 Measuring Heart Rate Variability from Wearable Tech
Antonio Malacad

Antonio will talk about how to use Javascript to extract, process, and visualize health data from wearable technologies. He will focus on heart rate variability, explaining its significance as a health metric as well as its limitations. Additionally he will also discuss the potential issues with wearable technologies.

16:30 Image Recognition in JavaScript
Asami Kamiya

Asami discusses introduction to image recognition by using JavaScript.
She'll talk about what image recognition is, what kind of image recognitions are out there, and how to use image recognition for our lives. Additionally, she'll introduce how to start to develop image recognition by oneself using an easy method.

17:00 Why Do We TypeScript?
Nemanja Milenkovic

The talk explores everything that led to TypeScript - difficulties and limitations found while using JavaScript (presented through code and examples). Further on, the talk introduces TypeScript in more details - the syntax, learning curve, and walk the audience through some code written with and without it.
