What we're about

This group is for people who love reading and discussing books. Our upcoming books are:

April 19: "The Sellout" by Paul Beatty

May 17: "Where’d You Go, Bernadette" by Maria Semple

June 21: "Hero of the Empire: The Boer War, a daring escape and the making of Winston Churchill" by Candice Millard

We come together monthly on the third Thursday of the month at 6:30pm with other book lovers to discuss a pre-selected book but we include time for an open format when you can discuss any book you are currently reading and would like to tell the group about it. Any book is fair game, we just want to know what you like about it and why. Books that we have read are: http://www.meetup.com/columbia-meetup-book-... (http://www.meetup.com/columbia-meetup-book-club/pages/Books_We%27ve_Read/)

We meet in the Nordstrom Marketplace Cafe which is a restaurant on the second floor inside the Nordstrom department store. We meet in the back of the restaurant. Feel free to grab something to eat or drink from the Cafe.

If you are a writer/agent just looking to promote a book, please do not join.

Online July Book Club Meeting

Online event

Our July book is "In A Sunburned Country" by Bill Bryson. Every time Bill Bryson walks out the door, memorable travel literature threatens to break out. This time in Australia. His previous excursion along the Appalachian Trail resulted in the sublime national bestseller A Walk in the Woods. In A Sunburned Country is his report on what he found in an entirely different place: Australia, the country that doubles as a continent, and a place with the friendliest inhabitants, the hottest, driest weather, and the most peculiar and lethal wildlife to be found on the planet. The result is a deliciously funny, fact-filled, and adventurous performance by a writer who combines humor, wonder, and unflagging curiousity. Despite the fact that Australia harbors more things that can kill you in extremely nasty ways than anywhere else, including sharks, crocodiles, snakes, even riptides and deserts, Bill Bryson adores the place, and he takes his readers on a rollicking ride far beyond that beaten tourist path. Wherever he goes he finds Australians who are cheerful, extroverted, and unfailingly obliging, and these beaming products of land with clean, safe cities, cold beer, and constant sunshine fill the pages of this wonderful book.
