We will meet on the western end of the Main Street bridge just in time for golden hour to capture downtown and the newly completed Scioto Mile. This location allows for several creative compositions to focus on the Columbus Skyline as well as the details of the Scioto Mile itself. We will go over some basics for shooting on a tripod and how camera angle affects the perspective of architecture images and the best type of camera mount to use for this type of photography. We will discuss how to keep your camera safe from shaking and spills even under windy conditions. We will discuss the use of filters to lengthen shutter speeds to add drama and movement of clouds and water, the best ways to calculate long shutter speeds and external triggers that allow for those long shutter speeds. As golden Hour shifts to blue hour we will focus on getting clean and sharp long exposures with an emphasis on balancing the dark blue skies with the brightly lit cityscape.

Also, for those who want to explore downtown before the class, we will be having a social event starting at 6:00pm at Mikey's Late Night Slice. Please make sure you sign up for both events

This is a great workshop for the beginner and intermediate photographer interested in taking more creative control of the camera. If you don't have a tripod, don't worry, I will be bringing two 3 Legged Thing brand tripods and will gladly loan them out for the duration of the workshop.

Itinerary:

6:00 - 6:45 (optional)- Eat pizza and talk photography at Mikey's Late Night Slice on 4th street.

6:45 - 7:45 (optional)- Leisurely photowalk from Mikey’s Late Night Slice through downtown towards Bicentennial Park/E. Main Street Bridge.

8:00 - 10:00ish - Landscape/Architecture shoot of downtown from the newly reconstructed Riverwalk! We will cover the following:

• working safety with a tripod to ensure clear and in-focus exposures

• The differences between multi-axis and ball-head camera mounts

• understanding how camera angle affects lens distortion and perspective

• how to use polarizing and Neutral Density filters correctly

• setting your camera up to shoot long exposures with minimal sensor noise

• options for triggering the camera when your shutter speed exceeds the camera maximum shutter speed of 30 seconds and how to properly estimate long exposures.

What to Bring with you:

A good, sturdy tripod

remote trigger that allows for shutter speeds exceeding 30 seconds.

Wide angle (16-35mm) and “normal” (35 to 50mm) lenses

A Flashlight (so that you can see your camera’s controls after dark).
