What we’re about

**[GROUP UPDATE]s will be shown in the discussions section of the Meetup App and/or on our Discord***

Group Goal: See Horror movies and meet new people!

Who are you hoping to meet: Horror movie fans and just cool new people in general

What will you do at your events: Watch movies first and foremost, but open to other fun activities!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
First-time attendees: below are some Frequently Asked Questions about events for your consideration:
  • What is involved in this type of event? (_Group Watch & Socialize Event)
  • We typically arrive before the movie, maybe chat and catch up with folks a bit, watch the movie in the theater, then afterwards have a more extended chat with everyone who saw the movie.
  • Do I have to chat before the movie?
  • Nope! Totally understandable if you'd rather just watch first so you can have something in common to discuss afterwards.
  • Will people approach me/talk to me?
  • Not a guarantee as it depends on who is hosting, but a good host or other group members will try to at least say hi to members after the movie and may make an effort to include newer faces in the conversation in some way. Please feel free to jump into the conversation as you feel comfortable and understand this is done with good intent :) We are happy to have you!
  • How will I know who is the host or where people are gathering to talk about the movie?
  • This depends on each host, but good practice is for the host to indicate a notable item of clothing they are wearing for other members to look out for. But generally we gather in a loose circle in the theater lobby or outside the theater to talk, so if you recognize the host or other group members - that's the spot we've decided on! Just kind of depends on the feel of the group where we gather.
  • What is with posting the seat numbers?
  • A good practice we've found is to post our seat numbers when we have ordered tickets for a movie. This is just another way for members of our group to find each other as it might not be immediately obvious who is here as part of the group event: some events are at public movie theaters, after all. You are not by any means obligated to post your seat number if you do not feel comfortable doing so, just something we've found that works nicely for encouraging some socialization.
  • Will there be food?
  • General guideline: if the movie starts at 7ish pm or later, you might wanna have dinner first or plan on buying movie snacks. Restaurant kitchens tend to close around 9-10pm. We sometimes do go to restaurants after movies as a group, but moreso bars whose kitchens may or may not be open. Plus, kind of bad manners for a group to descend upon a bar when the kitchen is closing is 10 minutes lol. Bars are just convenient social places, there is zero pressure to drink but there just aren't many places open late when we may leave movies. There is potential to order or provide food for group events, but it should not be expected unless stated in the event description.
  • What if I missed a showing of a movie? Will there be other showings?
  • There can indeed be other showings of a movie with the group! Be on the lookout for repeat viewings of both New Movies In Theaters or repeat viewings of movies that have already been released to purchase/stream. We sometimes have group watches at members' homes of classic movies or just ones that enough of the group would enjoy watching again.
  • How do I stay in contact with the group after the movie?
  • We have another app we use for discussion because Meetup is somewhat cumbersome to use for casual conversation. The app we use is called Discord. The link is posted below:
  • Link: https://discord.gg/D4M5daNC
  • [Place link here]
  • I don't know how to use Discord
  • No worries! If you can simply set up a Discord account, click the link to our group, and join it: there are tutorials we have placed WITHIN discord to show you around a bit. You can always feel free to ask the host or other members to help as well. Some hosts are happy to show anyone how to use the app and we can actually host some learning sessions if you request of us.
  • The Discord Invite link didn't work
  • Please see bullet above this one. Some hosts will be happy to help get Discord working for you.
  • Why are you using Discord as well as Meetup?
  • Really the combination of the Meetup App and the Discord App is how this group functions best. Meetup is great for finding people and using the geo-location feature. Discord is good for...pretty much everything else haha. We will likely try to post movie events on Meetup AND Discord, but there may be more events/discussion/etc. that occur on Discord because it simply works better, quicker, and smoother than Meetup. We highly encourage you to get the Discord App. You are not required to, as some events will be posted both places buuuuuutttt....it just allows for smoother communication in general.
  • I don't want more notifications/I don't want to download another app though
  • Valid point! You can mute all notifications in Discord, just fyi :) New technology can be difficult but we are here to help you!
  • Can I create events as a member?
  • Initially, no but this group is open to members suggesting events or becoming part of the Event Organizers over time. We don't want to open the opportunity for everybody initially to create events because that kind of role has some responsibility towards it. There are certain permissions granted to that role that not every member should have. However, if a member has a proven track record of treating every group member with due respect, and a willingness to plan events: they can become and Event Organizer and create their own events. Please reach out to leadership if this sounds like something that would interest you.
  • Can I donate to the group?
  • Absolutely! There is a monthly cost to keep the Organizer's Meetup Pro active which keeps the group active. We post the monthly cost in the Discord App. You are free to donate via a particular organizer's money-sending app of their choice. Venmo is the general app of choice for distributing funds amongst the group
Safety Section
Please remember that this is primarily a friendship-making, movie-watching group and not a singles group.  If romantic connections are an ancillary goal and they happen naturally and are mutual, that’s wonderful! But, certain behaviors can not be tolerated. Please let (Dan P - Organizer) know if you observe or experience any of the following and the offending member will be warned and removed from the group if necessary.
You can let other Organizers know potentially but I can truly only speak for my own character in this bio. I don't want to put this responsibility on everyone who creates an event. I may update this to include other names in the future but I think it is important to call out specific names of specific trusted individuals, so for that I break from the first-person-plural use of "we" for the time being.
• Sending unsolicited e-mails, messages or greetings or any unwelcome contact with members in person, via phone or other social media apps.
• Hitting on members at events or creepy/overbearing/weird conduct
• Solicitation on the Meetup site or at the events
Also, please keep in mind WHO is hosting events.  The nature of this group allow for many different folks to organize events, but not every person and every single event created can be monitored 100%. General guideline: if you trust the host, feel free to attend but still have a good sense of caution. Getting from/to events is your responsibility however if you DM a host you trust: certain accommodations can be made. Ex. I can't personally walk everyone to their car, but I can suggest the group all walk together to similar parking locations in the interest of group safety. I will try to be as accommodating as possible and will let you know if your request can work or not. - Dan P - Organizer
Thanks for your help in keeping this a happy, chatty, safe, movie-watching group of friends!
Take care & see you soon!
Timing Section
We'll try to post events in advance to help you plan but because of the nature of the things: sometimes movies will change theaters, just disappear entirely, or life just gets busy! Organizing is work and we try to do what we can to keep the group going but we're all human - life stuff comes up. Last-minute or day-of events are a possibility. We'd like for that not to be the norm, but ultimately that's why we allow for others to plan things, too. The more help, the better so ideally it isn't just one person planning everything all the time but rather a nice rotation of interested planners.
We’ll set up the event based on the best info available at the time, but understand that show times or even venues may change. All dates, times, and locations will be confirmed as soon as possible but be sure to check the event itself. Any updates to the event should be posted in the discussion section OF THE EVENT.
