AWARDS AND ACCLAIM: WHIPLASH won the 2014 Sundance Film Festival’s Audience Award and Grand Jury Prize for drama and is now regarded as the greatest film to ever premiere at Sundance! It won three Academy Awards for Best Supporting Actor for JK Simmons, Best Film Editing and Best Sound Mixing, and was nominated for Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay. In addition to his Oscar, JK Simmons' performance won the BAFTA, Critics' Choice, Golden Globe, and Screen Actors Guild awards for Best Supporting Actor. WHIPLASH has since come to be regarded as one of the best films of the 2010s, the 21st century, and of all time. It has a 94% positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which says: “Intense, inspiring, and well-acted, Whiplash is a brilliant sophomore effort from director Damien Chazelle and a riveting vehicle for stars J. K. Simmons and Miles Teller."

MY TAKE: At the time this came out, no one know director Damien Chazelle (LA LA LAND) and the trailer looked like 2 hours of JK Simmons screaming at some poor kid, so I initially passed on scheduling this for the group. I saw it solo and couldn’t have been more wrong! The film is electric, the performances are off the charts, the jazz soundtrack soars, and this turned out to be my favorite film of 2014! Immediately after the thrilling ending, I bolted up from my seat, wrote an announcement, and scheduled it as a group event that day! Since then, the group has seen it one other time, I bought the blue ray and have watched it countless times, and even own the soundtrack.
