CMG Summer Road Trip #3: FLASH GORDON at the Midland Theatre in Newark!

Join us as we wrap up our CMG Summer Road Trip Series with a trip just East of Columbus to the historic Midland Theatre in Newark! There, we’ll check out the campy-fun-sci-fi-action-adventure, FLASH GORDON and enjoy some top-reviewed Mexican cuisine at Mariposa! Here are details, a trailer and plan for this event:

FLASH GORDON: Based on the classic comic strip, Flash Gordon follows an American football player who is whisked away to the planet Mongo, where he must stop the evil Emperor Ming the Merciless from destroying Earth. Filled with over-the-top action, colorful costumes, and a legendary soundtrack by Queen, the film embraces its campy roots, delivering a unique blend of sci-fi adventure and tongue-in-cheek humor. Though not a blockbuster in its time, Flash Gordon has since become a cult favorite. The film is directed by Mike Hodges and stars Sam J. Jones, Melody Anderson, Max von Sydow, with Timothy Dalton, Mariangela Melato, Brian Blessed and Peter Wyngarde in supporting roles

MIDLAND THEATRE: The Midland Theatre is located at 36 N. Park Place in Newark, Ohio. They first opened their doors nearly 100 years ago in 1928! Since then, it’s been the home for everything from vaudeville acts to concerts, comedy, theater, orchestra performances, and the fun summer movie series we’ll be checking out! During Midland’s heyday, they played everything from Gone with the Wind to Ben Hur to Dr. Zhivago! Following years of decreasing attendance, decay and damage from the “Blizzard of ’78," the Midland Theater closed its doors from 1978 to 1992. At that time, the Longaberger Company purchased the theater giving it an $8.5 million renovation and restoration! The theater is now run by The Newark Midland Theatre Association, a local volunteer, non-profit organization, and is once again a gem of the city!

MARIPOSA: Mariposa Mexican Cuisine is located at 5 North 3rd Street in downtown Newark (just a short walk from the theater). They provide, “a Mexican-inspired dining experience that will transport your senses south of the border.” Mariposa delivers authentic Mexican flavors while being approachable and unique. Their menu boasts over 10 different authentic tacos, along with starters, large plates, sides, desserts and more! They also have a bar menu that features unique margaritas, hand-crafted cocktails, and an impressive array of wine, tequila and mezcal. PARKING: Parking on any nearby downtown street is FREE. We picked a restaurant within walking distance of the theater so you can park once and be close to both.
