What’s the difference between Indian & Bangladeshi food? One might ask. The main distinction is the staple carb of Bangladesh is rice, whereas in Indian cuisine it is wheat-based flatbreads like roti, naan & chapati. Is Bangladeshi food spicy? Yes & no, it depends on the region – not in the north where it is influenced by Persian & Mughal cuisine but hot & spicy indeed, if it is in the east. Do you know that Bangladesh is ranked the most vegetarian country in the world?

From the national dish Hilsa (or ilish) curry which is made from marinating the Hilsa fish in turmeric & chili paste, before slowly frying & serving with a mustard gravy & rice to Handesh, a traditional dessert made with a combination of rice flour, wheat flour, molasses, sugar & vegetable oil. Sometimes enriched with cinnamon or cardamom if desired. They also have a special drink called Borhani, made from sour doi, green chilli, mustard seeds, black salt, coriander & mint. It is considered by some to be a type of lassi.

Are you excited yet?

Let's learn how to prepare & cook Bangladeshi food from Aysha, our hobby cook from Bangladesh. This evening, we offer you a safe kitchen environment for 10 eager participants to create food that roars with richness, spices & aromatic qualities, the most underrated yet wonderous cuisines of Bangladesh.

What to expect:
In this 4-hour class, not only will you learn to prepare and cook local dishes from Bangladesh, you will also be socialising with fellow cooking enthusiasts and/or amateurs. As your host, I'll be there as the facilitator, entertainer and perhaps give some of you a helping hand 😉. After cooking, it will be time to sit down and enjoy your labour of hard work - eat!

Because Bangladeshis often use their hands rather than cutlery to eat, we will immerse into their tradition this evening for that! It would be a new experience for many of us!

What to bring:
Yourself! We provide all the ingredients, kitchen supplies & equipment & supply you with aprons for your guided cooking class.

What we will be cooking:

  • Homemade naan bread with 2 homemade dips.
  • Vegetarian tofu-based “butter chicken” & Aysha’s aromatic Indian rice.
  • Dessert: mango cream.

A quick intro of Aysha, your chef:
