Come experience the magic of singing in harmony by ear, at our drop-in OPEN HOUSE (by donation).

Humble Harmony is a fun and informal community singing group, like a community choir but without the pressure to perform, or follow sheet music. There are three group options each week: Monday afternoons in Nanaimo, Tuesday evenings in Nanaimo, and Thursday afternoons in Parksville (details at www.sylviahumble.ca/humble-harmony). Some folks come to more than one group!

  • Share your voice in a welcoming community group based purely on the joy of singing together in harmony, imperfectly.
  • Sing inspiring, uplifting and healing songs, world music, and songs of peace and hope.
  • Learn to harmonize by ear, and “wing it”. No experience necessary.
  • Explore your range and try different parts; no-one is pigeon-holed into an assigned section.
  • Enjoy vocal play, songs with actions, and simple body percussion. Chairs are provided but we often like to stand and move around the room.
  • Have a cup of ginger-lemon tea during the 10-minute break, and get to know each other.
  • On Tuesday evenings, we are joined by April Laurie for vocal play and groovy percussion!

Where and When?

Our Tuesday evening group meets from 7 - 8:45pm at Rotary House, 850 Third St., Nanaimo (turn onto Jinglepot Rd., and it’s at the “Serauxmen Fields”, across from the access to Buttertubs Marsh).

The March 31 OPEN SING is a drop-in event, where all are welcome to join us and learn some harmony-rich songs by ear. It’s also the first week of a six-week series (a deep-dive, members-only group running from Mar. 31 - May 5), but there is no pressure to join - just come and experience the magic!

Cost:

  • Open Sing - by donation (or included in 6-week Humble Harmony membership)
  • 6-week Membership: $75 - 150*, includes access to all three locations.
  • *The SLIDING SCALE is meant to welcome people of diverse backgrounds and economic access. Please consider your positionality and choose the sweet spot that is both generous and affordable for you.

This season, we'll be singing songs of LOVE and FREEDOM:
Be The Arc - Luke Wallace
Lead with Love - Melanie Demore
One Love - Bob Marley
Prayers for Freedom - Ma Muse
Senzeni Na - South African anti-apartheid song
We Need Peace - Gretchen Sleicher
Wild And Free - Sarina Partridge
