Hike Butano Redwoods, then Full Moon Sunset at Franklin Point!

Details

Stay cool this Wednesday by hiking in the ocean breeze. We’ll be exploring Butano State Park in the afternoon and then (extended option) catch the sunset at Franklin Point!

There is also a short walk in wetlands we can explore between Butano and Franklin Point, known to bird watchers. Combined, all three hikes would be about 7 miles & ~900’ elevation.

“Butano State Park was created in 1957 to protect California's coast redwoods from logging. Discover a quiet canyon filled with towering second- and third growth-redwood trees, babbling creeks. 40 miles of hiking trails feature oak woodland, wet riparian, and sunny chaparral ecosystems with dozens of campsites.“

Bring:
— Food and water, if doing both hikes
— Shoes with excellent traction
— Warm layer, and very good wind breaker for sunset walk.
— Flashlight (cell phone ok)
— Poison oak precaution

Schedule:
4pm - Meet at Butano State Park
Park together, in the second lot in.
State parking pass, or a $10 fee.
4:10pm - Hike Departs
**Trail Map **4.5 miles, 900’ TEG

~6:20pm — Short hike at Pescadero Marsh, if time allows.

7:00pm -- Franklin Point: Trail Map
Meet at the "North Whitehouse Creek Trail" across Highway 1 from the Costanoa access road — you can see the large Coastanoa sign facing you from across the Hwy. Click here for iPhone iMap.
(Note there is another trail labelled Franklin Point, but we will walk the N Whitehouse trail.) The small parking lot is not highly visible from the road, so double check that the Costanoa sign is across Hwy 1 from you, if in doubt.
