What we’re about
Was your favorite part of school when you went on field trips? Did you enjoy history classes but hated quizzes and tests? Are you new to Connecticut or have lived here all your life and want to discover more about this state?
Then this group is for you! Our goal is to get together with other life-long learners to explore all that this state has to offer. Together we'll learn about the people, places and stories that make up the history of Connecticut. This is an informal, casual group that thinks learning can be fun!
Join us as we visit museums, unique sites, old cemeteries, historic homes and other Connecticut landmarks.
There are so many people who complain about everything bad in this state. This group is an attempt to attract optimistic, curious people who can appreciate all that we have in our own backyards!

Ruins of Eastern CT: Lyon Homestead & Sawmill - History Hike
Natchaug State Forest , Pilfershire Rd, Eastford, CT 06242, Eastford, CT, USGeneral Nathaniel Lyon, born in Ashford, CT, was the first Union general to be killed in the American Civil War. His father was a sawmill operator who also dabbled in farming. The Lyon homestead was abandoned by the early 20th century.
In the late 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) cleaned up the dilapidated home and created a memorial park in honor of Nathaniel's birthplace.
Join us on this unique 2.2-mile hike, led by Emeritus State Archaeologist Nick Bellantoni, as we walk through the Lyon family homestead's farm and mill stone ruins. This site is featured in the book "Falcon Guides Hiking Ruins of Southern New England", co-authored by Bellantoni and Barbara Ann Kipfer.
This PUBLIC event will be held rain or shine! In case of severe weather, the walk will be cancelled and rescheduled to a later date.
This tour is part of "Walktober" an annual festival of over 200 unique outdoor hikes, events, and historical tours sponsored by The Last Green Valley - a nonprofit land stewardship organization based in Eastern Connecticut. Check out their website for more information!
