Gravestone Workshop at Hartford's Ancient Burying Ground

Details

Hartford's Ancient Burying Ground dates to around 1640. Between that year and the early 1800s, an estimated 5,000 to 6,000 people were laid to rest there, including many notable founders of Connecticut. The Ancient Burying Ground is the oldest historic site in Hartford, and the only one surviving from the 1600s.

Join us for this unique, hands-on workshop, where we'll hear from Ruth Shapleigh Brown of the CT Gravestone Network about preserving colonial gravestones and interpreting their history. We'll learn about how the symbolism and iconography changed over time and how to interpret spelling and language.

Finally, we'll watch a demonstration on how to gently clean gravestones, along with tips and tricks on how to photograph them. Training and cleaning materials supplied.
