The William Benton Museum of Art opened officially in 1967, though its roots go back to the early 20th century and the days of the Connecticut Agricultural College, which evolved into the University of Connecticut. The original Museum building was constructed in 1920 and served as The Beanery, the campus’s main dining hall until the mid-1940s.

The Benton collection of more than 6,000 objects, dating from the 15th through the 21st centuries, includes paintings, drawings, watercolors, prints, photographs, and sculptures.

Just us for a GUIDED TOUR of a special exhibition - "Encounters with the Collection: Exploring America at 250" which ties in with next year's nationwide celebration of the U.S. semiquincentennial. It draws on the museum’s holdings of American art to think broadly about how the very word “American” can be defined.

Highlights include landscapes and cityscapes by Ansel Adams, representations of Abraham Lincoln across different media, and a salon-style wall of portraits from the 18th century to the present.
