Details

East Haddam was settled by Europeans starting in 1685, but it was already home to various Indigenous peoples, including the Wangunks and Mohegans, who named it Machimoodus, the 'place of noises' due to frequent seismic activity

The town occupies 56.6 square miles of rolling countryside dotted with old farmsteads, lakes, and Devil's Hopyard State Park. Early commerce and industry included timber farming, shipbuilding, tanneries, and blacksmiths, and by the mid-1800s, retail shops, taverns, and mills proliferated in the area. In the 1910s-1950s, resorts in East Haddam became a popular destination for residents of New York City during the summer.
