Understanding the nature of consciousness is amongst humanity's most important questions. The Conscious AI meetup brings together the world's leading thinkers exploring the boundaries and intersection of consciousness and AI.
Following incredible talks by Prof. Anil Seth and Prof. Karl Friston we are very excited to have Ass.Prof Megan Peters deliver the next. Megan is a leading researcher in revealing how the brain represents and uses uncertainty, and performs adaptive computations based on noisy, incomplete information.
On May 28th @ 16:00 (UK), Megan will discuss “Conscious AI” from computation to phenomenology. Again, hosting this session is Calum Chace, globally recognised Philosopher and Author on the topic of AI and its impact on humanity.
Megan will talk about “Conscious AI” from computation to phenomenology
The past year has witnessed truly breakneck speed of development for increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence systems, with one kind in particular capturing the imaginations of investors, regulators, scientists, educators, and the general public: large language models. You, yourself, may have had the experience ‘conversing’ with chatGPT, or have read some of the many transcripts of conversations in which you get an eerie, unshakable sense of “someone being in there” for the AI. Of course, if one were to ask chatGPT, straight-out, it will say it is not conscious… but is it trustworthy, given that it can also ‘confabulate’ or ‘lie’? If one were to initially believe an AI were conscious (or not), what kind of evidence could shake that perspective? How could a truly sensitive test for consciousness be devised, and what factors impact deeply held beliefs about whether any other entity is conscious? One path forward could be to examine what is known about how human brains become conscious, not just the observation that humans behave as if conscious. This talk will explore the human side of consciousness science, including what is known from neuroscience and theory that could impact AI development and testing. And importantly, this presentation will explore how far technology may be from “conscious AI” — and what it would mean for education, science, and society if an artificial system were built that seems conscious but isn’t… or vice versa!
