Talk Summary

Could advanced AI systems possess the functional hallmarks of consciousness — and if so, how confident should we be that they do?

This talk will present work-in-progress from Rethink Priorities’ Digital Consciousness Model (DCM), a hierarchical Bayesian model designed to transform heterogeneous expert judgements (and eventually tests’ data) into quantitative credences that a given digital system is conscious.

While our focus is on digital systems, the model also addresses animal and human consciousness, providing crucial benchmarks against which we can calibrate our understanding of the less well-understood digital kind.

The presentation will conclude with a preliminary roadmap for the future of this work, reflecting some strategic directions.
