Convivial & Challenging Discussions -- the Wendell Berry/Ivan Illich/Amatai Etzioni SCHOOL FOR CONVIVIALITY
A social group for the discussion and sharing of ideas and sentiments on books, films, art, science, politics, religion, race, love and sexuality, healing, food, world travel, languages and any other topics of interest which may connect us with some passion for living. We don't shy away from difficult conversations. In our discussions, we are kind towards all -- including those not present.
• "In larger things we are convivial; what causes trouble is the trivial" ~Richard Armour
• "If time, so fleeting, must like humans die, let it be filled with good food and good talk, and then embalmed in the perfumes of conviviality." ~MFK Fisher
• "Have you learned the lessons only of those who admired you, or were tender with you, or stood aside for you? Have you not learned great lessons from those who braced themselves against you and disputed passage with you?" ~Walt Whitman
• "After you have exhausted what there is in business, politics, conviviality and so on -- have found that none of these finally satisfy, or permanently wear -- what remains? Nature remains." ~Walt Whitman
• "Healing is impossible in loneliness, it is the opposite of loneliness. Conviviality is healing. To be healed we must come with all the other creatures to the feast of Creation." ~Wendell Berry
• "What are the odds so long as the fire of the soul is kindled at the taper of conviviality and the wing of friendship never molts a feather?" ~Charles Dickens
We have a common-sense (and common sense) policy concerning our Meetup Profiles for the group.
1. Your User Name should be the first name you will go by among us -- and maybe something more like a last name or a last name initial to distinguish you from possible namesakes.
2. Your Profile Photo should be as close to a headshot as possible -- in case of doubt, think driver's licence or ID badge for work. (Or no picture at all if you are concerned about your online privacy.)
As this policy might be stricter than that of other Meetup groups you also belong to, creating a separate Meetup account -- attached to a separate email account of yours -- might be necessary. We apologize for the possible inconvenience.

1p Sat. April 18: we discuss Robert Greene's books (3 chapters), at our CC's
CC's Coffee House, 2800 Esplanade Ave, New Orleans, LA, USJoin us Saturday, April 18th, 1p to 2:15p at CC's Coffee House on Esplanade Ave. (between North Broad and City Park) for our fourth (monthly) discussion of Robert Greene's writings. (It's fine to have missed past meetings.) We might be outside or in their community room -- to the right, before the bathrooms, as you walk in. Come and leave anytime.
We'll discuss the third chapter (Law 3) of "THE LAWS OF HUMAN NATURE" (2018) by Robert Greene as well as Laws 9 and 10 in his 1999 book "THE 48 LAWS OF POWER".
About 40 (30+10) pages of reading. See links below.
Greene's sixth book, "The Laws of Human Nature", was released in October 2018. Through 18 "laws", the book examines people's conscious and unconscious drives, motivations, and cognitive biases. It also talks about persuasion, rationality and death. He considers it his most complete book and advises for anyone who hasn’t read anything from him to start from here. The book takes examples from Joseph Stalin, Anton Chekhov, Lyndon Johnson, Leo Tolstoy, Coco Chanel and others. [Wikipedia]
