Kotlin as a Better Java

Details
Joint Event with the Cork Java User Group
Very special thanks to our sponsors for this event, Instil (http://instil.co/)
We are delighted to welcome a very special guest down from Belfast, Garth Gilmour.
Of the several alternatives to Java the Kotlin language is emerging as the most beneficial and hassle free for mainstream projects. It offers a modernised vision of OO and FP whilst stopping short of the complexity of Scala and the conversion experience needed for Clojure. The language is supported by a fully featured IDE, a growing set of frameworks, full backwards compatibility and official endorsement for use on Android.
This talk will provide a complete overview of Kotlin. We will start with the core language but quickly move into real world tasks such as TDD with KotlinTest, writing RESTful services with Spring MVC and building Android clients. All the code will be provided so you can follow along as we go.
About Garth Gilmour
Garth Gilmour gave up full time development back in 1999 to teach and mentor full time. Since then he's delivered well over a thousand courses and workshops to all kinds of programmers from all kinds of backgrounds. He started teaching C++ to C coders, then Java to C++ coders, then C# to Java coders and now teaches everything to everybody, since we work in an industry pathologically incapable of making up its mind. Although self employed for most of this career he came to roost five years ago as 'Head of Learning' at Instil. When not at the whiteboard he coaches Krav Maga, lifts heavy weights and fights nerf wars with his kids.
