Sci-fi Book Club Meetup: Beggars in Spain & The Hemmingway Hoax
Gilman Brewing Santa Cruz Taproom Brewpub Gastropub Restaurant, 817 Soquel Ave, Santa Cruz, CA, US🖖Greetings, fellow sci-fi lovers!
📆Our next meetup will be:
Friday, November 20th @ 6:30pm
Gilman Brewing, 817 Soquel Ave, Santa Cruz, CA🔢 This group alternates between shorter and longer books. This is a shorter-book month, although some people like to read more, so we're including options for that. We'll be discussing
Beggars in Spain by Nancy Kress and an optional reading of The Hemingway Hoax by Joe Haldeman.
📖 Beggars in Spain by Nancy Kress imagines a future where genetic engineering allows some people to live without sleep. As the “Sleepless” gain advantages that others can’t match, resentment grows, raising questions about inequality, belonging, and what we owe one another. We are reading the 100-page novella, which is available as a stand-alone book, but has also been expanded into a 432-page novel. If you have the longer version, reading the rest is optional.
📖 In The Hemingway Hoax by Joe Haldeman, a scheme to forge a lost Hemingway manuscript spirals into a mind-bending adventure involving time travel and parallel worlds, where literary fraud has consequences far beyond a payday. This book is optional.📚You are welcome to "read" the books on paper, on Kindle, listen to the audiobook, etc. Come ready to discuss this and any other sci-fi-related things our conversation may touch upon!
🪧Find us on Gilman Brewing's patio with a sign on our table matching the event flyer. Food and drink are available counter-service. Here's a menu: https://order.toasttab.com/online/gilman-brewing-santa-cruz-817-soquel-ave
📿 Lastly, if anyone didn't get to make friendship bracelets or keychains last time, I'll bring the supplies again.
See you soon!! To infinity... 🛸👽🌠
