Bioluminescent dinoflagellates are microscopic algae that glow blue in the dark! 🌟

In this workshop, we will create a living dinoflagellate flask. We will inoculate a grow vessel with these microorganisms and feed them. We will also set up LED lights with a timed photoperiod. Dinoflagellates need a strict light/dark cycle to maintain their circadian rhythms. πŸ’€ When swirled at night, dinoflagellates glow bright blue! ✨

Participants will take home a kit that includes:
πŸ¦• Living bioluminescent dinoflagellates
πŸ¦• Flask with oxygen exchange filter as the mini aquarium
πŸ¦• Growth lamp LEDs
πŸ¦• Outlet timer to control the photoperiod

This is a family-friendly event so we have tiered pricing! Event tickets are $80 per adult. $40 per youth 18 and under with valid student ID. Youth must be accompanied by their guardian.

About the Instructor
This workshop is taught by Anthony Neil Tan, a BioTech professional and graduate from UC Berkeley in Bioengineering. He is currently an independent research scientist and his projects center on optimizing the cultivation of high-value plants via various horticultural methods including toggling photoperiods and LED color spectra. His portfolio ranges from isolating environmental samples of bacteria at CalTech to culturing yeast and bacterial cells for plant genetic transformations at the Department of Energy's Joint BioEnergy Institute.
