Cover6 Community

So far this fall, every target has been a network we run ourselves. Tonight the network lives in somebody else's data center, and the perimeter is a login.

A lot of cloud incidents don't start with an exploit. They start with an identity that has more access than it needs, or a setting nobody checked. We'll walk through how identity and access work in the cloud, misconfigure one on purpose in a lab account we own, and then find the trail it left in the logs.

This one is network-wide. HQ in the DMV, Atlanta, and South Florida on the same call.

🎯 What We'll Cover
- The shared responsibility model: what the cloud provider secures and what's still on you
- Identity is the perimeter: users, roles, and what least privilege looks like in practice
- One misconfiguration, live: how it happens and the log entry that gives it away
- The certs on this path (AWS, Azure, CCSP) and how to practice without running up a bill

Hosted by Tyrone E. Wilson, founder of Cover6 Solutions, 30 years in IT and cybersecurity.

Two days later, Tyrone speaks at VetSecCon (Fri Oct 23). Stay to the end for a preview.

Your first talk shouldn't be in front of 500 strangers. It should be here, with people who want you to do well.

For Cybersecurity Awareness Month, we're handing the stage to three to five first-time speakers, 5 to 15 minutes each. Every speaker is paired with a coach who has already spoken at Cover6, so they walk in ready. Come support them, ask good questions, and see how doable a first talk really is.

The lineup will be posted here as speakers are confirmed.

📖 Read-ahead: How to Give Your First Cybersecurity Talk
https://www.cover6solutions.com/how-to-give-your-first-cybersecurity-talk/?utm_source=meetup&utm_medium=event&utm_campaign=bic-path

This month the Meet & Greet goes to BSides NoVA.

We're skipping the hotel this time. Cover6 Community is joining the BSides NoVA 10th-anniversary Halloween Party at George Mason's Mason Square campus in Arlington. Same idea as always: no agenda, no slides, just the DMV security community in one room. This time it's a bigger room, with fireside chats, scary movies, food and drinks.

👉 Step 1: Register for BSides NoVA (Oct 30–31)
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/bsidesnova-2026-cyber-security-conference-30-31-arlington-va-tickets-2002245202299?aff=cover6community
Then RSVP here so we know you're coming with the community.

🎃 The party: Friday, 5:00 PM, Threat Village (Fuse, Room 1311-A). Costumes welcome.

🔎 Come early: Tyrone runs a 4-hour hands-on workshop Friday morning, 8:00 AM, Room 118
"First Watch: Live SOC Threat Hunting Against Real Internet Attack Traffic." You hunt a brand-new incident in a live Splunk environment fed by real attack traffic. Nobody in the room has seen the scenario before.

👋 Find our table. Cover6 has a community table at BSides. Come say hi to Tyrone and the team on Friday: path advice, resume tips, a few CTF challenges, and good conversation.

🙋 Want to help? BSides NoVA is still looking for volunteers. It's one of the best ways to meet people in this field:

BSides NoVA has been part of this community's story for years, and this is their 10th. Let's show up for them.

Every path we've walked this fall ends up in the same room: the one where somebody decides what a company spends on security, which risks it accepts, and how to explain all of it to people who don't speak cyber. That's the CISO's job.

A vCISO, or virtual CISO, does that job for companies that don't have or don't need a full-time one.

It's Veterans Day, which fits. Tyrone enlisted in the Army in February 1996, has spent the 30 years since in IT and cybersecurity, and today runs a vCISO practice. Tonight he walks you through that road and what the job really looks like once you get there.

To everyone who served: thank you.

This one is network-wide. HQ in the DMV, Atlanta, and South Florida on the same call.

🎯 What We'll Cover
- What a CISO and a vCISO actually do, and how the two jobs differ
- The first 90 days with a new client: the assessment, the risk register, and the first report to leadership
- Translating risk for people who don't speak cyber
- How to get there from wherever you're starting, and the certs that matter (CISSP, CISM)
