What we’re about
Welcome.
Cycle Touring Club, Glasgow is the volunteer-lead member group of Cycling UK for the Greater Glasgow & Lanarkshire areas. We are primarily set up to offer friendly group cycling to Cycling UK members of all abilities within these areas. As well as offering group riding, we do our best to protect the interests of existing and would-be cyclists, and to inspire people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities to discover the joys of cycling. As our historic name suggests(*) we are not a racing club and our rides are generally moderate-paced day rides, though we also run leisurely paced and faster rides on the basis of the needs of the membership. We also run occasional cycling weekends. (*Cycle Touring Club)
We also offer a welcome to non-Cycling UK members onto our rides on the understanding that after 3 rides with us, they must join Cycling UK should they wish to continue. This is for insurance reasons. Cycling UK, the national cycling charity, has championed the cause of cycling since 1878 and the benefits of joining are many including insurance, cycling advice, legal support, holiday opportunities and discounts. Membership is highly recommended. The website can be viewed here https://www.cyclinguk.org/.
As an independent, democratic organisation, CTC Glasgow reflects the commitment of our members, volunteers and partners to make cycling mainstream, making a lasting difference to the lives of individuals and communities.
Please visit our website at https://www.cyclinguk.org/local-groups/glasgow for details of rides and other news. In particular, please read our Riding Safely Guidelines https://www.cyclinguk.org/group/page/our-riding-safely-guidelines.
NOTES:
* Before joining us for a ride please note carefully of the following.
* Riders should be self-sufficient in the event of breakdown (breakdown tools & spares or phone to arrange pick-up)
* Please be prepared to bring along your own refreshments/food as café stops are likely not possible.
* If details indicate that you have not cycled with CTC on a regular basis or become a Cycling UK member after 3 CTC rides, we will remove you from the group. You may rejoin with the expectation you are an active member and join Cycling UK*
Thank you

Ride subject to change (or worst-case cancellation) if weather forecast poor. - Ayrshire and caving by bicycle!Pollokshaws West train station, Glasgow
This ride allows me to combine 3 of my interests (obsessions?), cycling, geology and caves. This is a 50 miler heading to the SW of Glasgow and out into Ayrshire to visit Cleeves Cove, the only cave I know of formed by dissolution of limestone in the Carboniferous rocks of Central Scotland. Sea caves formed by wave action are common and solution caves in the Cambrian Durness Limestone of the NW Highlands are well documented, as are solution caves in the metamorphic limestones of the Highlands. This cave is a bit of a rarity.
Should you want to go into the cave, it’s a bit mucky and slippy but fairly accessible, but you have to judge for yourself if this is right for you. It has a little bit of interesting speleothem so perhaps bring a head-torch or borrow mine?
Mainly, this is just a ride that will stop by the cave entrance for an alfresco lunch so I suggest bringing sandwiches/picnic stuff. The route itself is largely on pleasant/quiet country lanes through Neilston, Lugton and Barmill, returning on cycle route 7 skirting past Dalry, Kilbirnie and Lochwinnoch. The ride out is mostly on rolling countryside with a bit of a pull out of Glasgow. Pretty flat on the return. Average speeds 10-12mph.
Route is here: https://www.plotaroute.com/route/3072026?units=miles
Meet 10 am Pollokshaws West Station. Anticipated 6-7 hours including stops.
Coffee stops potentially available at Barrmill, Glengarnock Lochshore Park and Lochwinnoch as the mood takes.
- Central Station, Gordon Street - proposed reduction of cycle access!Needs location
Further to the message below, which I put out yesterday, GoBike has now put out this Consultation Extra, which gives far more information:
Consultation Extra: Gordon Street & Central Station entrance – GoBike
Please do read and respond to the Consultation!
Glasgow City Council has a public realm consultation out just now, closing this coming Sunday which is proposing changes to the "public realm" on Gordon Street right outside Central Station.
GoBike, the Strathclyde Cycle Campaign, were not notified of it - probably because it's "public realm", but they did discover it.
They have published this:"Gordon Street public realm consultation – Glasgow City Council has launched this consultation (deadline Sun 24 Aug)
The proposed design includes making the section of Gordon Street from Hope St to Union St one way eastbound and thus the removal of the current painted cycle lane in front of the station. Do you cycle in this area either to the station or to connect to the westbound cycle lane on Waterloo St?
We have contacted the Council and they have confirmed this is the plan. You can see more details here of the proposed alternative westbound route 20250725_GCC_GordonStreet_ProposedCycleRouteRe-routing.pdf as well as upgrades to the contraflow cycle lanes from St Vincent St via West Nile St and Gordon St. We are awaiting further clarification from the Council whether these form part of the Gordon Street project and/or the timescales for these."I looked at this yesterday and it really looks as if they are reducing cycle access in the area! Proposing to make the short protected southbound contraflow lane on Hope St from Gordon St to Waterloo St northbound to allow people to then cycle east on Gordon St. To get to the station from the east it looks suspiciously like cycling 3 sides of a square!
PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do look at the links and if you have views please respond to the consultation.
