Dive into Open Source: A Newcomer's Guide is a whirlwind introduction to the world of open source so, if you are bringing a hat, I recommend putting on a strap 😜

I will fly through the impact of open source on technology and the world, and introduce you to the many ways you can contribute. Hint: It is not just through code contributions. I'll discuss the importance of community and how you can set up your own project for success. I will also run through the very basics of Git and the role GitHub plays, touch a bit on licensing, and conclude by discussing the importance of taking care of yourself.

About the speaker: Schalk Neethling
I am a kind-hearted individual with a strong belief in the power of kindness. As a passionate advocate for mental health, I aim to create awareness and understanding around mental illness while promoting mindfulness in our daily lives. Living with the challenges caused by ADHD, depression, and generalised anxiety disorder, I understand how tricky it can be to navigate an environment that seems to want to see you fail actively.

Professionally, I am a front-end engineer with a deep appreciation for the open-source community. I advocate for an open web, accessibility, and inclusivity, recognising the importance of creating digital spaces that all can access. As an indie maker, I love exploring new ideas and bringing them to life. Through my podcasts, I aim to elevate the voices of individuals passionate about positively impacting the world.

I believe in respect, openness, and creating opportunities for others to thrive. I am committed to empowering others, supporting their journeys, and fostering a community where everyone can contribute and succeed. As a teacher, I have discovered the joy of sharing knowledge and empowering others to reach their full potential. I am dedicated to improving the world by amplifying the voices of those with similar visions.

Let's create a brighter future, one opportunity and voice at a time.
