Enjoy a private tour and be one of the first to see inside this extraordinary place nestled on the legendary Detroit Golf Club. The 5,623 sq ft brick mansion was built in 1927. The Rose Estate served as a witness to two of the world’s most extraordinary women - Ms. Aretha Franklin and Ms. Patricia Burnett. As reported by The Detroit News, “It’s hard to beat the provenance of the 1927 home known as Rose Estate.”
Ordered by Elsie and Harry Burnett Sr., their daughter-in-law, Patricia Hill Burnett, would live here nearly 45 years. A world-famous portrait artist and feminist, she was the 1942 Miss Michigan and Miss Congeniality at Miss America. She listed The Rose on early documents of the National Organization for Women, including its first feminist planning conference that invited women from around the world. Her work would grace the world’s galleries as a portrait painter for leading women including: Margaret Thatcher, Betty Ford, Indira Gandhi, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Jackie Joyner Kersee, and Rosa Parks. She would sell the property in 1993 to Ms. Aretha Franklin.
With multiple homes, The Detroit News called The Rose “Aretha Franklin’s last Detroit property” from 1993 until her passing in 2018. Twice named by Rolling Stone as the Greatest Singer of All Time, The Rose served as witness to writing her Grammy-nominated album A Rose is Still A Rose– inspired by her time here and reflecting on her life. All told, she sold 75 million records. Nominated for 44 Grammy Awards, she won 18 and later the Lifetime Achievement award.
The home continues to serve as a private residence nearly 100 years since the first brick was laid. The 2024 restoration committed to preserving its history for generations to come.
