Join noted historian Irene Moore Davis, President of the Essex County Black Historical Research Society, for an illuminating guided tour of Amherstburg Freedom Museum and Sandwich First Baptist Church.
Explore the Amherstburg Freedom Museum, which preserves and shares the history of African Canadians who escaped slavery in the U.S., and the Sandwich First Baptist Church, one of Canada’s oldest Black churches and a key stop on the Underground Railroad.
Windsor and the surrounding area were critical destinations for freedom seekers because of their proximity to the U.S. border and their welcoming Black communities, making this region a vital part of the transnational network that helped enslaved people escape to freedom.
This tour offers a unique opportunity to understand the complexity and remarkable success of the Underground Railroad by learning about the history on both sides of the border.
