About us
"We turn to art to make sense of a life that is heartbreakingly fragile."
-Margaret Renkl
Cultured Milwaukee is a reemerging social community with education, enlightenment, and bringing people together as our core goals. We are excited you accepted our invitation to join.
Welcome! My name is James and I write as the new steward of the group.
Our membership comprises a diverse group of intellectually curious people on a mission of cultural exploration, discovery, and understanding.
This will not be a solo journey, we encourage everyone to join in together, actively participate, connect, and from time to time, anchor as hosts.
You can expect thoughtful and enriching, cultural experiences from a variety of creative sources. We endeavor to look beyond the mundane to purposefully embrace the many enjoyable people and places the Milwaukee area offers!
Our lovely, always enthusiastic, and talented Founder and now Organizer Emerita Elizabeth, created this group to highlight events around the city that may be “out of the norm”. Elizabeth’s introductory invitation set the framework and the tone of our existence: "Perhaps if these are the kinds of events you want to attend, but you don’t have anyone to go with - You have found your people!"
Recently, I had a discussion with a member about the direction of the group: For all our scheduled events, the plan is to have a wide range of clear-headed, affordable activities which lean into arts, music, food, and books. We want to be savvy and selective in our choices of shared experiences.
Please keep in mind, this current administration has severely cut federal humanities funding to arts organizations and for them to survive, the revenue has to come from somewhere. Given little choice, there will be events with costs and fees, including local fundraisers. We strongly urge and recommend your generous financial support. Without those necessary resources, our cherished cultural institutions will be in profound peril or cease to exist.
Your thoughts, ideas, and suggestions are always welcomed, valued, and considered. The path ahead for Cultured Milwaukee may be steep, however I am very optimistic we will together, achieve our goals!
Important reminders:
1. Please treat each other, vendors, and those you encounter with respect, courtesy, and integrity.
2. By attending Cultured Milwaukee events, members and guests accept full responsibility for their own wellbeing, health, and safety, including, but not limited to any food allergies or health restrictions. Cultured Milwaukee and its leadership are not responsible for any injuries or allergic reactions.
3. Good manners and proper etiquette also encompass updating your RSVP. It is tremendously frustrating to research, make arrangements, and save seats for members who are never going to show. "No shows" are the hardest part of being an organizer and are treated accordingly.
4. All members must have a recognizable human image, of themselves, to participate in events. It is extremely difficult to locate members at events with only pictures of their pets, scenery, or worst, a complete blank.
5. Contributions to fund our group are not required, but gladly accepted. Meetup fees are expensive and all the accoutrements which go along with running a comfortable gathering, cost. Thank you in advance.
6. Most importantly, we are all here to find joy in our interactions; experience genuine fellowship; develop meaningful, in person, connections; and make our ongoing culture, part of a better world.
