About us

Are you wondering if going to an opera might actually be a fun experience? Do you wish someone would point you to a few operas you could understand? Maybe you are puzzled about exactly what all those people are doing up there on the stage, and why. Are you the person who saw one opera and gave up? Or one of the many who think operas are fine, but always to expensive?

This group is a way to get started! Let’s share our questions and find answers. Let’s start simple -- in our own language -- with music and singing we can listen to for fun. Let’s find ways to enjoy the spectacle of opera, without getting lost in the weeds and strictures of past eras and antique cultures. Let’s skip the fancy expensive hats, and just enjoy the show. (OK, wear your fancy hat; doesn’t matter.)

“Curious About Opera?” is a forum to talk about this topic from many angles: operas to start with; how to watch for free, on your own time; what to look for, so you can really enjoy the music and the story; how to avoid the boring ones; a few words and phrases to toss around so you sound like an expert; etc.
