What we're about

Welcome Skeptics! Join Charlottesville's lively Skeptical community! Founded in 2006, we're in our tenth year of discussion dinners, happy hours, lectures, picnics, seasonal parties, with more events planned each month!

What is Skepticism?

Skepticism," when it applies to the Skeptic movement, means valuing the use of reason, rationality and the tools of science in our everyday lives. (Note it does not mean "cynicism" or simply "Hey, I'm skeptical about a lot of things so this group must be right for me.")

Charlottesville Skeptics is part of a growing international movement known as "modern skepticism" or "scientific skepticism," consisting of an informal network of groups, writers and bloggers. Prominent skeptical organizations include the Center for Inquiry (http://www.centerforinquiry.net), the Skeptics Society (http://www.skeptic.com), the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry (http://www.csicop.org), the Richard Dawkins Foundation (http://richarddawkins.net), the Council for Secular Humanism (http://www.secularhumanism.org), the American Humanist Association (http://www.americanhumanist.org) and the James Randi Educational Foundation (http://www.randi.org). Well-known periodicals include Skeptic (http://www.skeptic.com/the_magazine), Free Inquiry (http://www.secularhumanism.org/index.php?section=fi&page=index), The Humanist (http://thehumanist.org), Humanist Network News (http://www.americanhumanist.org/HNN) and the Skeptical Inquirer (http://csi-store.myshopify.com/collections/frontpage/products/si).

Skepticism is a positive, not a negative trait. We are gardeners of ideas, weeding as needed so that good ideas may grow. Most skeptics conclude that nontheism flows naturally from the above. In particular, Charlottesville Skeptics has an especially close relationship with regional humanist groups, so is therefore largely comprised of persons with nonreligious philosophies such as humanists, atheists, agnostics, Brights, naturalists, and freethinkers.

And yes, we claim Thomas Jefferson as one of us! We have little doubt if he were alive today he'd be Charlottesville Skeptics' president emeritus.

Goals of Charlottesville Skeptics

1) Provide fellowship and fun among skeptics.
2) Promote critical thinking and the integration of the scientific method into our daily lives.
3) Increase understanding of the benefits of science to society.
4) Increase understanding of the negative impacts to society of poor science, pseudoscience, and science devaluation.
5) Promote truth-seeking based on reason and evidence over dogma in solving personal and societal problems.

Upcoming events (4+)

First Tuesdays Dinner and (sometimes) discussion

Needs a location

Dinner and socializing, sometimes followed by a discussion on a particular skeptic topic which occasionally may even be announced in advance. As of June 2022, the first Tuesday of each month.

With the pandemic apparently receding, we are provisionally resuming in-person meetings for those members who are vaccinated. Those not vaccinated or who prefer the remote format may request in comments below at least 24 hours in advance of the meeting that that a Zoom link be provided, and we will make efforts to accommodate them. The meeting may also revert to Zoom-only if the organizer determines that is appropriate due to sufficient rise in new COVID cases in Virginia.

For those vaccinated and inclined to meet in-person, we're tentatively meeting at Timberwood Taphouse for now. (That's the one over by Fifth Street Station.)

Suggestions for topics welcome in the comments. (Suggestions for other venues also welcome.)

Third Thursdays "Drinking Skeptically" Social

Needs a location

An informal, no prearranged topic "drinking skeptically" meeting. As of June 2022, every third Thursday of the month.

For those vaccinated and inclined to meet in-person, we're probably going to use Vinny's (near the Charlottesville Airport) as our Thursday meetings for a while.
