Please join us for the Rideau Lakes Cycle Tour (RLCT), a two-day cycling tour from Ottawa to Kingston on Saturday, and Kingston to Ottawa on Sunday, with an overnight stay at Queen's University.
There is no official start time; RLCT riders leave at different times (anywhere between 5am and 8am) and, consequently, arrive at different times (anywhere between 10am and 6pm). No one monitors your departure and arrival times, and you can ride at any pace you're comfortable with. Some riders have completed the one-way trip in 4.5 hours, while others needed 12 hours.
There are five routes to choose from: Century****Classic (171kmx 2), Cruise (183) x 2), and Challenge (210km x 2), Century Plus (119km x 2), Cataraqui Gravel (119km x 2), there is an option to do the ride to Kingston and take a ride back.
*I will be doing the Century Plus ride from Perth 119km both ways.
If you would like to join us, RSVP here to let us know, and register at the RLCT website. As we get closer to the tour, please let us know in the comments section below which routes you plan to do.
Feel free to start and finish the tour any time that's convenient for you. We could initially head out together in the morning, but it's a long ride and riders may feel the need to go at their own pace. Once we reach Kingston, we could touch base via text/phone, have dinner together, and enjoy a beer or ice-cream in downtown Kingston.
== Preparation ==
Please read the OBC instructions carefully and, in particular, heed their advice regarding training and preparation. OBC recommends riding at least +1,000kms before the tour.I will host a few rides in April and May to prepare us for the tour.
== Parking ==
You can park your car for $5/day at Algonquin College on Saturday and Sunday. To register your car online, click here.
You can park free at the Conlon Recreation Park in Perth.== Registration and Accommodation ==
To register, please go to the RLCT website. The earlier you register, the better your accommodation will be; OBC usually gives the best rooms to the early-birds.You get your own private room. If you are a couple, please indicate so when you register.
OBC members can pre-check-in on Friday afternoon. Non-members will have to check-in on Saturday morning.
== Luggage ==
You are allowed to bring one medium-size bag, which OBC will deliver to Kingston by van. A small duffel bag is usually enough. Kingston nights can be cold in June; bring a jacket.== Meals ==
If you choose to stay at Queen's University, you will be provided with a hearty dinner on Saturday and a breakfast on Sunday. If the food is not to your liking, you have the option of walking to downtown Kingston (Queen Street, Princess Street, Ontario Street) where you will find restaurants, bakeries, and coffee-shops.The menus are in the pictures below.
== Bike Store ==
If, after arriving in Kingston, you realize you need cycling gear or attire, there is a good-quality bike store within walking distance from Queen's University.== Riding Solo ==
You may, for whatever reason, decide to ride solo and reconnect with us in Kingston. Riding solo has its advantages; you can pace yourself, join passing groups when you want/need to (with the groups' permission), and make pit stops only when necessary. The decision is yours.== Weather ==
The tour will take place no matter what the weather conditions are. Please note that June weather can be tricky; over the years the tour has seen hail, freezing temperatures, strong head winds, thundershowers, and scorching heat with +40 humidex.== Cancellation ==
If, for whatever reason, you decide to pull out of the tour after you've registered, please note that OBC does not offer refunds. However, you may be able to sell your ticket on the OBC Facebook page or TriRudy.== Last Minute Deals ==
Some cyclists wait until the very last minute (e.g. Friday evening) to purchase their ticket second-hand from the OBC Facebook page or TriRudy. The advantage is that you would know exactly what the weather conditions are, and you may find tickets at discounted prices. The disadvantage is that you may not find a ticket and miss out on the tour.== Fun Facts ==
OBC is one of Canada's oldest and largest bicycle clubs, and the RLCT is their signature event. The first tour took place on May 20th 1972, and cost $12 per person. 80 riders departed Ottawa and 65 returned the next day. Currently, about 2,000 cyclists participate in the tour every year.== Links ==
