Update your Rails!

We'll be meeting at Tech Liminal's new space, 1 block from Bart!

It's 2013. Do you know where your Rails application is? Is it hanging out in 3.0? 3.1? Those neighborhoods are getting a bit seedy, what with Rails 4.0 coming out Real Soon Now.

As it turns out, I have a few Rails apps of my own that are desperately needing updates.

Let's talk security

Did you know what security flaws are embedded in your Rails application? Let's put it this way: if you haven't updated for a while, you're vulnerable. Updating to the latest version of Rails removes all known security issues from your application.

You owe it to your users.

Who should come?

• Freelancers: sharpen your skill, add to your service offer.

• Startups: you definitely owe it to your users to stay up to date.

• Intermediate Rails developers: you're probably going to get tasked with this sooner or later (and probably sooner); get a head start.

Getting prepared

Here are a few things which you can do to prepare for Update your Rails:

• Run `bundle outdated` to see which of your gems are out of date.

• Ensure your local rvm or rbenv environments work correctly for your existing versions.

Place and date

Again, we need a hacker-compatible venue close to Bart in Oakland. We'll nail down the date once we have the venue.
