The Zone of Interest is a 2023 historical drama film written and directed by Jonathan Glazer, co-produced between the United Kingdom, the United States and Poland. The film is loosely based on the 2014 novel by Martin Amis.
At the movie’s center is a dream house built on nightmares. The film focuses on the life of Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss (Christian Friedel) and his wife Hedwig (Sandra Hüller), who live with their family in that home in the "Zone of Interest" next to the concentration camp.
Rudolf Höss is the commandant of Auschwitz, and he and his wife have been granted a fine parcel of land adjacent to the camp. Their elegant house meets all their needs, surrounded by a garden of bright flowers for their children to play in.
The Zone of Interest is a disturbing look at how easily evil can be normalized, although its slow pace will challenge some viewers. It's a thought-provoking and controversial work that delves into the horrors of the Holocaust.
