Records Management – An integral part of Data Governance

Details

Data Governance, including but not limited to the DMBok framework, must by its very nature include structured and unstructured data. Within this mass of data, much of it needs to be treated and managed as a record. This requires classification, retention and disposal.

Whilst this is easily understood and handled in the paper world by records managers, it is less well managed when it comes to electronic documents and records, and even less well understood when it is in the form of structured data in line-of-business systems.

This paper presents a framework for managing records, highlighting and emphasising the overlaps and interrelationships with other data governance elements, especially privacy, and information security. The essential relationship between IT, Records management, GRC and the business users will be explored.

Dr. Paul Mullon is an Information Governance consultant and trainer. He has B. Com (Hons), MBA, Certified Information Professional (CIP), Information Governance Professional (IGP), Fellow of Institute of Information Management (FIIM), Honorary PhD (Records and Information Management), certified change manager.
He has over 40 years’ experience in both the paper and electronic document and records management environments.
He is very involved in standards development and regularly attends ISO committee meetings as Head of the South Africa Delegation for document and records management standards.
