The Surangama Sutra II - May 2024

Last month we looked at the outline of the first chapter of The Surangama Sutra including the reason that this sutra was created and how harshly difficult it was in the old time for knowledge/wisdom to cross the border. It reminds us to remember to be grateful for having access to numbers of valuable and forever useful resource 24/7 for free.

This month, we’re to continue to look into the most intelligent Ananda, who is as bright as a star and being the most devoted disciple to Buddha Shakyamuni for 25 years, who listens to all the teachings from Buddha Shakyamuni first hand, yet still fails to manage the most crucial dilemma when it arises. Furthermore, Ananda managed to fail all the ‘tests’ whilst his ‘fellow classmates’ being certified with various ranking (srotapanna, Anagamin, Sakrd-agamin and arhat), including Mātaṅga.

If being intelligent, sincere, devoted, wise aren’t the key to transform Buddha’s teachings into practical practice for us to see the Truth in our every day life, what is, what will that be?

In chapter 2, Buddha Shakyamuni began the teaching by stripping Ananda of the attachment to the illusory body and egotic mind before revealing the mind that creates the illusion and all the subjects and objects in it are from the same mind.

For anyone who wishes to master the usage of mind and to get the maximum positive result from your own mind, you won’t want to miss this chapter 😊
