PROFESSOR PHILIP HOWARD, Director of the Oxford Internet Institute, will explore the latest challenges to democracy and offer ideas as to how truth and trust can be reintroduced into public life, drawing upon pioneering social science research looking at fake news in 50 countries.
For the past year, stories about the influence of social media on major political decisions have dominated the news on both sides of the Atlantic. Algorithms, automation, and junk news have become not only powerful tools for social movements, but also effective means for social control.
Philip Howard is Director of the Oxford Internet Institute and a statutory Professor at Balliol College, University of Oxford. He writes about information politics and international affairs and is the author of eight books, including Pax Technica: How the Internet of Things May Set Us Free or Lock Us Up. The Oxford Internet Institute was awarded National Democratic Institute (NDI)’s 2017 Democracy Award for its work combatting disinformation. Howard was named one of top global thinkers by Foreign Policy magazine in 2017. He tweets @pnhoward.
