Twitter's #Elections2020 through the lens of the arts, data science, and technology
###
ALEX LAW and ANA AREIAS will discuss an end-to-end workflow of gathering, enriching, and analyzing tweets about the impending US presidential election. This talk will illustrate how we can dive deeper into the present moment and build social consciousness through data-driven analysis in a big data workflow enabled by GraphXR, Neo4j, and serverless cloud provisioning.
Joining them from a unique integrated perspective blending the arts, data science, and digital media, JIAYI YOUNG will share Project Echo, a public participatory platform where the fabrication of the fake meets the real and profound personal concerns of the everyday. This project juxtaposes tweets of disinformation and thoughts of fleeting moments in one place. As artifacts of this transitional moment in history, they challenge a virtue we have known for as long we have existed - telling the truth! This project stands as art to bring consciousness to the nature of a collective human experience today, and at the same time, is intended as activism in the public place as a stance against the culture of the fake.
Alex Law is the Communications Coordinator at Kineviz where she supports the growing community around the GraphXR visual analytics platform. Alex comes to graph data from a cross-disciplinary background combining the sciences (Bachelors in Human Biology from UCSC) and arts (Oberlin Dance Collective/ODC Pilot Artist), as well as experience in public healthcare and administration at Navigant Consulting.
Ana Areias is a Data Scientist for Kineviz. A Harvard MPA-ID grad, she has worked on poverty prediction and big data for labor at the World Bank, has been a fellow at Data Incubator, was part of DataCorps with DataKind and Program Manager at Data-Pop Alliance. She is an avid surfer and struggling billiards player.
Jiayi Young is an Associate Professor at UC Davis Department of Design. Young creates large-scale installations, permanent and temporary public artworks. Her inquiries lie within the emergent and experimental field of digital media with an emphasis on the cross-disciplinary areas of design that integrate the arts and the sciences with cutting-edge technology. Her current research and creative work are focused on constructing data-driven interfaces, installations, real-time projection graphics, participatory performances, and immersive environments in cultural and public places with a goal of creating generative energy to engage the public in social dialogue. https://project-echo.ucdavis.edu
