Details

This is a hybrid (virtual and in-person--at the National Press Club) event.

NotebookLM for Journalists: Practical Uses for Research, Reporting, and Beyond

This presentation and discussion will explore Google’s NotebookLM. Billed as “your personalized AI research assistant,” we will investigate the various ways journalists can make use of this tool, which is built on Gemini and can be used in instances beyond your typical GenAI chatbot.

The presentation will be practical and example-oriented and walk you through concrete examples for journalists and the general audience.

Kyle Plantz is the senior program manager for the J+ professional development team at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY. He leads initiatives in executive leadership, entrepreneurial journalism, product development, video business, and artificial intelligence. His current focus includes exploring the role of AI in supporting research and reporting workflows.

Kyle began his journalism career covering the 2016 elections in New Hampshire and later worked at Science News, where he experimented with ways to build reader trust and helped expand the magazine’s educational reach to high schools across the U.S. He has also contributed to national media literacy efforts through his work with the National Association for Media Literacy Education (NAMLE), and he currently serves as a solutions consultant for the Solutions Journalism Network, vetting evidence-based reporting on climate and social issues.

In addition to mentoring student journalists from conflict-affected regions through Paper Airplanes, Kyle serves as Chair of the Board for The Daily Free Press, Boston University’s independent student newspaper, where he was previously Editor-in-Chief. He holds a B.S. in Journalism from Boston University, with minors in History and Political Science.
