Watching the latest demonstrations from both OpenAI (4o) and Google (Astra), it is easy to imagine a not too distant future where, far from locking phones away at school, they will be the assistants that help children learn; and AI agents their constant companions through life. But what kind of a future does AI offer us, and are any of us, or our societies, ready for this future. This talk will focus on the recent advances in the decades old endeavour to build intelligent systems, trying to get beyond thinking in terms of AIs generally, to thinking about the specific types of AI models that are being developed. While even the current AI technology seems to be setting in motion a profound transformation of our society that will last over a decade, it will be argued it is within our reach to realise many benefits, and avoid most of the problems, if we have the collective will to do so.
David Triggs graduated with degrees Electrical Engineering and Computing Science, followed by a long career in Australia and then across Asia Pacific consulting on data centre software, especially focused on performance, and doing things like getting 21 million clients on an Oracle database in real time. An interest in the limitations of symbolic AI led to a Masters in Cognitive Science – the interdisciplinary study of mind and intelligence, embracing philosophy, psychology, artificial intelligence, neuroscience, linguistics, and anthropology. However, until recently, there seemed to be more immediate opportunity in consulting on Data Science, in domains ranging from customer interaction in financial services, through failure prediction in industrial equipment, to analytic platforms for agriculture, including aerial imagery, leading in turn to an interest in deep learning and getting AI to work well in human processes.
