Title: Data-Informed Citizen Participation

Synopsis:
There are many questions of public interest that would be well-informed by access to and analysis of relevant data. But what if the relevant data is inaccessible to the average citizen? With the right tools, there are ways to get hold of data that will allow even a sole citizen to engage in a more meaningful and informed discussion of any issue. In this session, Hanif will share a couple of personal and collaborative data projects motivated by a desire to raise the quality of discourse on broad-interest topics. He will share the effort involved and how even a small measure of data, presented effectively, can cut through the noise of discourse.

Bio:
Hanif Samad has worked as a data scientist, statistician, and software engineer across multiple industries: healthcare, fintech, traveltech, social services, and now corporate real estate tech.

He currently works at Saltmine, a workplace optimization technology company. His true passion lies in philosophy and he runs the Singapore Philosophy Meetup Group, where critical questions and readings on a broad range of societal issues are engaged with.

This is the 4th in a series of talks held in tandem with MUSPP's interactive data visualization module.

Format: Event is conducted in person together with masters and phd students from the MUSPP module. Seats for the classroom space are really limited, so if you registered to attend but cannot make it, please, please release the slot so that others can come. We often get people who subscribe to attend but do not come for the event (about 40%), and as a community we really don't want to go down the route of taking attendance. :(

Thank you in advance. Anyway this is a great opportunity to network or meet people if you're interested in the data visualization space. Thanks!
