Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the event of this year!! As Data Science Portugal meetups return for another year full of events and surprises in the A.I. field, we start by bringing you live to one of the hottest debates: what is Tensorflow, and is it really Machine Learning?! Carlos Soares from University of Porto demonstrates why TensorFlow IS NOT machine learning and why Deep Learning might not be the best answer for every problem. Ricardo Teixeira from Talkdesk will share with us an overview of data lake architectures, their benefits, drawbacks and their usefulness to data scientists.

Wanna start this New DS Year on the right foot? This is it! Join us for another inspiring event at Porto and become part of the Data Science Portugal Community™! By the way... we have a fresh stock of B.E.E.R at your disposal 😉

The meetup #21 of Data Science Portugal (https://www.facebook.com/datascienceportugal) is going to take place on Wednesday, 24th January, 2018 around 18h30, at UPTEC - main auditorium - Allen 455, R. Alfredo Allen, 4000 Porto.

=== SCHEDULE ===

The preliminary agenda for the meetup is the following:
• 18:30-19:00: Welcome and get together.
• 19:00-19:30: Talk 1: "Data Lake architectures and Data Science: Diving in." by Ricardo Teixeira - Talkdesk.
• 19:40-19:45: Group photo.
• 19:45-20:15: Networking / Coffee Break.
• 20:15-20:45: Talk 2: "TensorFlow is NOT machine learning" by Carlos Soares - University of Porto.
• 20:50: Closing, hanging out and some beers
• 21:00: Dinner is optional but it might be an excellent opportunity for networking.

See you there!

Talk1: "Data Lake architectures and Data Science: Diving in." by Ricardo Teixeira

Abstract:
Let's get our feet wet in data lake architectures, understand their benefits, drawbacks and their usefulness to data scientists.

Short Bio:
Ricardo is a Senior Data Engineer at Talkdesk with the role of tech lead for the Data Engineering team and involved in the evolution of Talkdesk's data platform. Before, he was the lead engineer for Farfech's Big Data team.

Talk2: "TensorFlow is NOT machine learning" by Carlos Soares

Abstract:
Machine Learning/Data Mining/Data Science/Statistics/{your favorite name here} are reasonably complex fields, which require an understanding of several basic concepts that can only be obtained with a solid education. The combination of the DeepLearning hype with the availability of tools, such as TensorFlow, enabling us to obtain results quickly has lead to the illusion that those basic concepts are not necessary in order to become a good data scientist. On the other hand, I might just be jealous of those young people doing cool stuff with Deep Learning. We’ll discuss these issues during this talk.

Short Bio:
Carlos Soares received an undergraduate degree (licenciatura) in Systems Engineering and Informatics from Universidade do Minho, Portugal, an M.Sc. degree in Artificial Intelligence and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Universidade do Porto, Portugal. After 15 years at the Faculty of Economics, he is now an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Engineering of Universidade do Porto. Carlos also teaches at PBS (Porto Business School, formerly EGP-UPBS) and he is a post-graduation supervisor at the Universidade de São Paulo. Carlos is a researcher at INESC TEC, focusing on metalearning/automML but with a general interest in Machine Learning/Data Mining, Business Intelligence and Evolutionary Computation. He has participated in more than 20 national and international R&ID as well as consulting projects. His collaborations with companies include SMARKIO, Farfetch, InovRetail, WeDo, CreativeSystems, Bivolino, among others. Carlos has published/edited several books and more than 100 papers in journals and conferences, of which more than 50 are indexed by ISI. He has participated in the organization of several events, including KDD 2009 and ECML PKDD 2012 and he was one of the programme chairs for ECML PKDD 2015 and IDA 2016. He is currently a member of the Executive Committee of the Department of Informatics Engineering. In 2009, he was awarded the Scientific Merit and Excellence Award of the Portuguese AI Association. Scientific fact: 99% of TensorFlow users were not born when Carlos started working on Machine Learning.
