Details

Machine Learning is a pathway of many outcomes and not all of them are perfect. It’s time to address both edges of the sword that we aspire to use. In this meetup we will hear Nuno Moniz from FCUP/INESC TEC which will show us the not so pretty side of Machine Learning. Luís Roque, CEO of HUUB will, in turn, tell us the story of the company he has helped to found, and how Machine Learning in this case revealed the positive edge of the sword.
“It’s dangerous to go alone. Take this.” two awesome perspectives on Machine Learning with you.

Talk 1: Machine Learning is gullible, insecure and inefficient. By Nuno Moniz
Abstract: The impact of machine learning is undeniable and has been for many years, so that's that. Still, immersed in the hype (now it's deep learning) and going through the motions exploring how it can be applied to new domains, there are a few important issues around the corner in the evolution of ML that should be discussed. This talk will focus on three arguments (provocations) where today's ML is mostly 1) gullible, 2) insecure, and 3) energy-inefficient.
Short Bio: Computer Engineering Alumni of ISEP (2012), finished his PhD in Computer Science at the Faculty of Science - University of Porto (FCUP) in 2017, focusing on machine learning and the prediction of rare and extreme values. He is now a PostDoc Fellow at INESC TEC, where he's a coordinator of the Data Science Hub (interface with industry), and an Invited Professor at FCUP teaching programming and fraud detection courses.

Talk 2: The path to an AI driven company by Luís Roque
Abstract: There was a time when companies were process driven, then technology took the stage and shaped the entire Enterprise world outline and framework. The pace came booming and rather quickly they started to be driven by Product. For some, the final shift and the ultimate holy grail are data-driven companies. But there's something new out there, something undeniable. Something we've become. AI-driven companies like HUUB work differently, beginning in the lean and lightweight product mindset, the decoupled tech architecture, the data platform, the agnostic problem-solving intelligence, everything lives in this very dynamic and complex ecosystem. We will break down the backbone that supports this living thing and guide us to become this AI-driven company, where your first solution to problems is not a process, a service or a feature. It is a model!
Short bio: As CEO and Co-Founder of HUUB, Luís Roque is disrupting the Fashion Supply Chain of the future, managing about 50 brands worldwide through HUUB’s Product: Spoke. This management platform Spoke, created inhouse from the beginning, has evolved with state of the art frameworks, a microservices architecture strengthen with A.I models based on Machine Learning and Deep Learning implementations to bring transversal optimization to the Supply Chain of brands. The continuous academic evolution is a backbone of Luis path, with a Master of Science in Industrial Engineering and Management, a degree in Computer Engineering, a specialization in Web Development and a Postgraduate degree in Business Intelligence & Analytics already completed. Currently Luis is doing a PhD in Informatics Engineering, focused on Sequential Data-related Deep Learning Applications.
