Abstract: While numbers have always been part of journalism, only recently have newsrooms started to integrate people that combine the traditional journalist skills with statistics and programming. But how are these distinct fields (though in some ways similar) being used to produce news?
In this talk, we will address how data journalists think, produce stories, and, most importantly, how they are bridging the gap between data science and journalism, always with the public interest in mind.
Short Bio: Rui Barros is a data journalist/ journocoder/ news nerd currently working at PÚBLICO. There he uses data and code to tell stories, build news applications, develop useful data-driven features or simply help someone by scraping a website.
Breakout sessions:
Come and network with other Data Scientist enthusiasts, Don’t be shy! Bring your topics, bring your questions, bring your friends, and network with us. We are going to have a few topics prepared but feel free to wander around and engage with peers.
