Network Visualizations as a Design Attitude, by Dario Rodighiero
Details
In the spread of data visualization, networks covered an important role in terms of practice and theory; the prince of networks Bruno Latour brilliantly merged social theory with technology and design by founding the Médialab Science Po. This presentation presents network visualizations from an aesthetic perspective: if great efforts led to new algorithms for more effective computation, the visual appearance of networks is not secondary. After a historical introduction about the different forms that networks acquired over time, innovative ways of displaying them will be showcased, giving you an overall perspective of the aesthetic evolution of network visualizations.
Speaker:
Dario Rodighiero is a research scholar at Harvard University, and a postdoc at the Metalab, a research unit dedicated to innovation in the arts and humanities. The Swiss National Science Foundation granted him two consecutive fellowships. His capacity at the intersection of design, science, and humanities makes him comfortable in multiple disciplines. The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL) awarded him a Ph.D. in Science, and formerly he was employed at MIT, Sciences Po, and the European Commission, which recently appointed him as an external expert in data visualization and interface design.
